How to protect ornamental grasses for the winter?

Very popular in recent years decorative plants, which are absolutely outstanding beauty, various species and varieties of ornamental grasses, after beautiful flowering in autumn, require special protection in winter.

Like most plants that we have the pleasure to grow in grass gardens, I do not like too low temperatures characteristic of our climate at this time of year.

Therefore, if we want them to survive the frosts and decorate our properties again in the spring, they should be properly protected, especially if we planted them this year. So, how to protect ornamental grasses for the winter? What materials should you use for this? When to put on winter covers?

First: we tie the grass in the shape of sheaves

The first stage in the process of securing ornamental grasses is tying them into sheaves. The right time for this is when the shoots and leaves begin to wither. It is best to carry out these works on a possibly dry and sunny day, because dried grass will be much easier to protect than when it is wet.

To form the right shape of the sheaf, it is worth tying the grass in two or even three places with a strong, durable jute twine.

Thanks to this, during windy days, the sheaves will keep their shape, and their leaves will not be torn by stronger gusts throughout the garden. Importantly, dry leaves are an additional protection for plants against the cold, so they should not be cut off.

Secondly, we protect shoots from frost

In a situation where minus temperatures persist for more than three days, further steps should be taken, namely to protect ornamental grasses by piling mounds of bark.

Only then, frost can harm these plants - too early cover could cause scalding and rot of the shoots. An excellent way is to spread pine bark or dry peat around clumps of grass.

What's more, evergreen ornamental grasses such as Pic Carlit fescue need additional protection measures, either in the form of conifer twigs or white agrotextile. Before covering the sheaves with such material, do not tie them too tightly.
