How to grow herbs in pots?

In a world dominated by highly processed food, we are more and more willing to return to our roots, to nature.

Not only do we try to eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, while shopping we read the composition of individual products and prepare healthy meals at home, but we also give up ready-made products. And so, for example, instead of spice mixes, we gladly reach for fresh herbs or dry them ourselves.

After all, if we can use fresh basil, mint, thyme, marjoram, oregano or coriander, why use ready-made compositions?

Herbs in the kitchen

Growing herbs, even on a kitchen windowsill, is easier than any of us might think. Thanks to this, we not only have fresh, aromatic plants always at hand at any time, but we can also be sure that the herbs added to many dishes are 100% natural, ecological, grown without unnecessary chemical fertilizers.

Homegrown herbs

The vast majority of commonly known and often used herbs in the kitchen can be grown in pots. What's more, in garden stores you will find whole sets of containers designed primarily for herb cultivation. Certainly, the best place for them will be a well-sunlit kitchen window sill, and in the summer - a balcony or terrace.

First of all, annual herbs such as basil, savory and marjoram, biennial herbs - caraway, and perennial (perennial) herbs - lemon balm, mint, oregano, thyme and rosemary, are perfectly accepted in pots. It is worth remembering to plant larger herbs in separate pots, because their roots grow strongly.

The best time to sow herbs and proven methods of cultivation

First of all, the ideal time for sowing herbs is the end of winter, i.e. the beginning of March. At this time of year, the days are getting longer, thanks to which the seedlings are provided with the right amount of sun necessary for proper growth.

As we suffer from a shortage of fresh vegetables in autumn and winter, it is worth sowing your favorite herbs also in July or August. It is important to sow the seeds at the beginning in small containers, for example plastic yoghurt cups, in which we have previously made a hole at the bottom so that excess water can drain freely.

It is best to use a special soil for sowing seeds. Only when the seedlings grow up can we transplant them into larger pots filled with a mixture of soil for vegetables and herbs. It is recommended to place small pebbles at the bottom, thanks to which water will not remain in the pot.
