How to make Compost?

One of the oldest, used since time immemorial, and above all fully natural fertilizers is compost, which each of us can prepare in our own garden. It is enough to collect vegetable and fruit peelings, mowed grass and leaves that fall from the trees in autumn.

It is on their basis that the "black gold of gardeners" is created - an ecological means of supplying vegetables, fruits, as well as flowers, shrubs and ornamental trees.

How to set up a composter step by step to get compost full of useful ingredients? How to make a natural fertilizer that will nourish and support the development of plants?

Compost - the benefits of its production

There are many benefits to setting up a composter. Thanks to it, organic waste in the form of grasses, leaves, vegetable and fruit peelings, trimmed branches and shoots of trees and shrubs, instead of being collected in garbage cans, are subjected to the decomposition process.

Therefore, not only do we gain a fully ecological fertilizer, available almost at any time in our own backyard, but we also save space and money on the disposal of organic waste.

What is the composting process?

Composting is a complex process, which in principle comes down to a closed circulation of matter in the natural environment. Microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and earthworms play a key role in it. The former decompose organic substances contained in waste of plant origin.

On the occasion of digestion, they produce thermal energy, and thus heat the compost to a temperature of about 20 or even 40 degrees Celsius. In turn, earthworms produce humus. Finally, the compost matures, the fertilization process is completed, and the temperature equalizes with that of the environment.

How to make compost?

To prepare compost, composters are necessary, i.e. special containers into which organic waste is thrown, which in the composting process turns into ecological fertilizer. You can choose from plastic and metal composters, open or closed. Regardless of which model we choose, it is important to place it on the sidelines of the garden, in a shaded place, sheltered from the wind and covered by vegetation. When our composter is ready, we can start filling it with organic waste.

It is important to alternately arrange wet (mowed grass, weeds) and dry (hay, branches and dry shoots of bushes) material. Generally, the composting process takes a year. If we care about time, we can speed up the production of organic compost. For this purpose, it is enough to reach for composting preparations.
