How to protect plants from heat?

This year, summer surprised us exceptionally early. Already in May, thermometers showed temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. It's scary to think what will happen in this and the next months.

One thing is certain - by hydrating your body, protecting your head, skin and eyes from harmful UV radiation, we must not forget about garden plants.

During such periods, they also require special treatment. That is why we suggest how to protect plants from heat.

Watering

When the air temperature dangerously approaches or exceeds 30 degrees Celsius, abundant, systematic watering plays a huge role. However, the time of day when we reach for garden hoses, watering cans and buckets is not without significance. Watering at noon, in full sun, will not only not help the plants, but will actually harm them - they will burn.

Therefore, it is recommended to water the garden early in the morning, when both the soil and the earth in pots and boxes are not yet warmed up, or late in the evening. During the summer, a very convenient and practical solution is to invest in sprinkler systems. We should pay a lot of attention to species that have a flat root system, i.e. maples, magnolias, hydrangeas, heathers and others.

Mulching

To protect the plants from the negative effects of the scorching sun, it is also important to mulch the soil around them (SEE: Agrotextiles for mulching). In this respect, shredded organic material (sawdust, straw, bark of coniferous trees, plant cuttings) is irreplaceable, which is worth scattering not only under selected plants in the garden, but also flowers in pots and boxes.

Thanks to this, the soil, and thus the root system, will not dry out and will maintain the proper level of moisture.

Sun protection

If possible, plants grown in pots and boxes, e.g. on terraces and balconies on hot, sunny days, should be moved to shaded places, covered with an umbrella or covered with a special gardening fabric. This is especially important for species with large leaves. In addition, it is worth remembering that pots and other containers in a dark color, made of plastic, as well as metal ones heat up much faster.
