How to care for garden hydrangeas?

There is no doubt that hydrangeas are one of the most impressive garden plants. Quite large, lush green leaves and abundant ball-shaped inflorescences of various colors densely intertwine with each other, creating a compact bush, also in the form of a ball. 

Importantly, on the horticultural market we will find many varieties of these flowers, which differ from you mainly in color and sometimes in shape. 

If we add to this the fact that hydrangeas are not too demanding, nothing stands in the way of buying the first seedlings, and thus starting the adventure with the cultivation of these unique plants. However, before that happens, let's check how their care should look like from the moment of buying small bushes.


Site and soil

Optimum conditions for the cultivation of hydrangeas are created by places that are well exposed to the sun, or partially shaded. A large amount of sunlight affects the abundant flowering of these plants and the intense color of the flowers. The soil also plays a key role. 

While after planting the seedlings, the care itself is not troublesome, the bushes have high requirements as to the soil. Ideally, when it is fertile, humus, acidic with a pH of 4.5 to 5.5. In the case of an alkaline substrate, you can use acidic peat. It is not recommended to plant hydrangeas on heavy, clayey soils.


Watering

Few people know that the name "hydrangea" means "water bush", which by itself indicates to us that the plant needs a lot of water for proper growth. In this respect, it feels good in slightly shaded positions, where it is easier to keep the soil moist. 

However, if we care about beautiful, large flowers, and therefore we choose a well-lit place for cultivation, we must remember about regular watering. This is especially important during drought.


Fertilization

In the care of hydrangeas, an important treatment is fertilization (SEE: GARDENING FERTILIZERS), which should be repeated two to three times during the season. The point is to provide the plant with nutrients that enable proper growth and development. 

Fertilizer for hydrangeas should be a composition of macro- and microelements supporting the process of formation of flower and leaf buds. Thanks to nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, the plant will bloom intensively throughout the summer.
