Blueberry cultivation and care

The American blueberry, also called the great one, has gained immense popularity in recent years.

These small fruits, apart from the fact that they taste great, have many valuable nutritional and health-promoting values. Hence, we are happy to bite them for dessert, add them to sweet pastries or ice cream.

Meringues with whipped cream and lots of blueberries and raspberries are already popular. Unfortunately, in stores and at markets, blueberries are one of the most expensive fruits. However, there is a way! Just plant a bush in your own garden.

Blueberry cultivation

The ideal place for highbush blueberries is a well-sunlit, warm, secluded place. For the proper growth of the shrub, humus, acidic soil with a pH of 3.8 to 4.8 is necessary. Ideally, the content of organic compounds exceeds 7%. In addition, the groundwater level is of great importance. It should stay at a height of 35-60 cm.

Therefore, the best conditions for the cultivation of blueberries are provided by forest and field plots, areas located near pine forests. Otherwise, i.e. in areas that are not conducive to the cultivation of this shrub, one cannot forget about acidifying the soil before planting the blueberry.

The appropriate effect will allow us to obtain sour peat, sulphur, sawdust from conifers or a special fertilizer for blueberries. Finally, it is worth remembering that the shrubs are best taken when we plant two-year-old plants. Then they have a well-developed root system and start bearing fruit the following year.

Blueberry care

First of all, you must not forget about the correct pruning of blueberry bushes. Without it, growths have few buds, as a result of which not only are the fruits smaller, but they also fall off the branches prematurely.

For the first three years after planting, only weak and diseased shoots should be removed from the bush. In turn, after four years, following the principle that the maximum number of main shoots should not exceed six to eight, it is worth getting rid of all old, drying, thin, damaged ones.

Finally, after ten years, when the bushes are very dense and the crop is mostly falling off, you should cut all the shoots close to the ground. Soon they will grow completely new ones.
